joseph arthur: killer's knife.

dl: JOSEPH ARTHUR - Killer's Knife (YSI)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
There was a point in my life where I wanted to like Joseph Arthur a lot. You know? Enough to list him on crappy social networking sites in the "Favorite Music" section. In fact, I don't even think crappy social networking sites existed back when I wanted to like him. It started when I heard "Honey And The Moon" in American Wedding (shut up, I was like 17 when it came out!). I then scrambled to find some of his other songs, discovering "In The Sun" and hearing it in Saved a year later. Dude must seriously make a buck on the TV/film spots.

But even if most of America is only familiar with Joseph Arthur through episodes of Dawson's Creek, I'd like to inform them that he's not all just romantic heart-tugging acoustic shit. "Killer's Knife" is a release off of Arthur's most recent EP Crazy Rain, one of four that will precede the September 2008 release of his seventh studio album Temporary People. T
here's no need to say it's a bit edgier than the songs previously mentioned, because
I suppose an idiot could figure out that it's not about dreaming up lovers and shores of freedom.

dl: YEASAYER - 2080 (brenmar remix) (YSI)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
I remember that I once had this Choose Your Own Adventure book in which "you" get shrunken down to the size of an ant. The happiest ending finds you falling from very high into a cup of pudding! Oh, delicious...until you think about the physics of the situation. Technically you should have drowned in that pudding. But it sure beats the other option-- time-traveling and getting stepped on by a giant dinosaur! And you were just trying to time-travel back to the point before you got shrinky with it! Gadzooks!

Brenmar
's remix of Yeasayer's "2080" is like choosing to confront the dinosaur. Except in this case, the dinosaur is magic and makes you as big as it is! And it wants to be your friend! And eat giant bowls of pudding with it! And then you'd step on people you don't like. You know?

Who is Brenmar? I'm glad you asked. Brenmar is Bill Salas, the man behind the drums/electronics of These Are Powers. He's done a remix of their song "Little Sisters" as well as remixes of Aa, Clipd Beaks, Mahjongg, and High Places. The tunes are constructed "
out of old dusty records, digital and analogue synthesizers, microphones, samplers, pedals, toys, and found sounds." Such sounds make MGMT tour-mates Yeasayer's sufficiently more interesting, which is quite a task given that Yeasayer is (no offense) totally boring.

rewind project: purple crush & anoraak.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
I've been seeing that Database edit of George Benson's "Turn Your Love Around" quite a bit on the blogs. While I'm excited about REWIND, Buffetlibre's '80s cover and remix project, I didn't really get into this contribution. So why, you ask, am I excited about this project? Three words, two groups: Anoraak, Purple Crush.

I wrote about Anoraak a while back, praising their laid-back electro tune "The Wizzard". Having heard quite a bit more from them since then, I've fallen deeper in love. Whether they're doing a remix or cover, I'm sure it'll have me dancing in my deskchair (if not, on it).

Purple Crush? Well Isla just embodies the 1980s with her flawless dance moves and Kate Bush-covering self. And did I mention her dance moves? Serious. Lee. I was in awe of her performance at the March 20th Palms Out Sounds party (@ Luna Lounge, Brooklyn). She's a one-woman '80s party!

Other artists included on REWIND include:
Dragonette, Sidechains, The Toxic Avenger, Culture Prophet, Grum, Mendetz, ER2, The Amplid, Moulinex, RAC, Russ Chimes, UMYO, Hello Tokyo, CFCF, Fisk vs. Blende, Oh Snap!, Xinobi, The Shoes, CSK OK, Keenhouse, Cryptonites, Adventure Kid, !Trash Yourself, Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin, Paper Scissors, Tknik, Black Dominoes, Vitamins For You, Computer Club, Glitch Bitch, South Central, Clash The Disko Kids, Lillica Libertine, Daroc, Pink Skull, Damage, Beesmunt Soundsystem, Royal Rumble, Mat Payne, Loud Pipes, We Are Terrorists, Emotiquon, Night Facilities, and Tempest Disco.

BLOGGER UPDATE: With a little spying, it appears that Purple Crush will be covering Madonna.

ITMS!! fave Big Bang TV is playing at Galapagos (70 N. 60th St, btw Kent & Wythe) on next Tuesday April 29th, and there will be NO COVER and FREE SPARKS ALL NIGHT LONG? dl: COMMON f/ LILY ALLEN - Drivin Me Wild (WrighTrax remix) (YSI) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm still skeptical about Lily Allen. "Smile" inexplicably annoyed, and the grossness of "Alfie" just made me hate her. Then "Drivin Me Wild" dropped. I avoided it because of my disdain for her, finally caving in and watching the video. Not only was it a completely enjoyable song, but Lily Allen is actually quite charming in the video. I was surprised it wasn't a bigger hit! But, um, I still don't like Lily Allen.

WrighTrax
is a production duo that recently signed with Kanye West's G.O.O.D. Music. They do a lot of work with the virtually ignored Big Sean, and seem to have some affiliation with that Can't Tell Me Nothing mixtape that featured those CRS and "Young Folks" joints everyone inexplicably went crazy about last year. This same mixtape also featured a track by Really Doe that sampled Jennifer Hudson singing "Move" in Dreamgirls, which few people inexplicably went crazy about. Not even the gays!

But I'm getting off topic. Well, I don't think I was ever on topic in the first place. WrighTrax's remix of "Drivin Me Wild" provides a less cutesy alternative to the original, making it seem like Lily Allen has a little bit of street cred.

whatfor: call that girl.

dl: WHATFOR - Call That Girl (YSI)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Whatfor (not to be confused with THIS Whatfor) was described to me as "sort of like The Kinks collaborating with Rufus Wainwright". I wasn't sure what to think of that description, but the debut album Sooner Late Than Never will be released on May 20th through Science of Sound records. I'm generally a sucker for anything Science of Sound releases-- Sleeping In The Aviary, His & Her Vanities, She Is So Beautiful/She Is So Blonde...so even if I wasn't down with The Kinks and Rufus Wainwright getting down, I was still excited to hear this album.

"Call That Girl" was an immediate standout track, possibly because I am in love with short songs. Other possibilities? It's a fucking amazing pop song. It's amazing to the degree that it makes me want to compare Whatfor to The Beatles. And you know what? I hate when bloggers compare things to The Beatles, because the 1964 Beatles are almost indistinguishable from the 1970 Beatles. But I don't know enough about The Beatles (yeah I said it!) to make that distinction. Hell, maybe this isn't like The Beatles at all*. Maybe YOU are The Beatles.

And maybe this delightful indie-pop-rock album is made for summer. Listening to it makes me feel like this, except with more volleyball. And I'd actually be good at volleyball so I'd singlehandedly kick the other team's ass. And then sharks would eat all the people I don't like. You know?

gotdion: britney remix.

dl: BRITNEY SPEARS - Break The Ice (GotdioN remix) (YSI)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Months ago, I was standing in a Hudson News at Penn Station when some British woman began ranting-- "These stupid Americans! They just worship her!" While nearly shouting this, she pawed at all the magazines with Britney Spears on the cover. I really wanted to grab this lady and be like, "Do you not see that every one of these magazines is depicting her in a negative sense?" Perhaps she operated under the "all press is good press" philosophy, in which the tabloids' giving Spears exposure was some sort of "worship". Or she was just dumb.

But maybe she was prophetic? With barely any promotion and an awful performance at the MTV VMAs, Blackout sold 2 million copies worldwide. By "barely any promotion", I mean that the majority of the promotion was provided by Britney's constant spot on newsstands for being a complete wreck-- a superstar gone wrong. While this tabloid-fueled 2 million may seem scant, consider the state of the music industry!*

"Gimme More" and "Piece of Me" broke into the US top ten, keeping Spears relevant for her stripper antics and usage of the word "derriere" in a pop song. And then, while Spears was too much of a wreck to even appear in her own video, they released "Break The Ice". Really? Maybe it's just me, but this was one of my least favorite songs on the album. Why didn't they just throw T-Pain onto a remix of "Hot As Ice"? "Toy Soldier"? "Radar"? "Get Naked"? Something remotely catchy? I'm clearly not the only one who wasn't digging this song, as it hasn't even come close to charting as high as the previous singles...

Given my disdain for this song, you can imagine that I wasn't overly pumped when I received a message from GotdioN that he remixed it. Oddly enough though, "Break The Ice" is almost good now? GotdioN's take allows the song to move forward more than the original, and it's poppier than all the shitty dance mixes I've heard elsewhere. The verdict from people who (probably) like the song seems to be that this shit is "hot", even if the man himself mentions that it's held back by "a few timing issues with the vocals".

benni e: call me daddy.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Say hello to Benni E. Back in November, she busted on stage out of nowhere at a Sgt. Sass show to deliver a verse over 50 Cent's "I Get Money". And hell...this mysterious lady in a pink-wig spit so hard that I imagined Fiddy was somewhere crying about his inferiority. I was immediately starstruck, feeling a need to go shake her hand and churn out a compliment of no substance like, "Woooow, oh my god. That was SO AWESOME." I relived this day over and over as I listened to the Sgt. Sass mixtape Double S 4 Mayor, continuing to be intrigued by this self-proclaimed "vegetarian hype girl".

Two weekends ago, she celebrated the release of her mixtape Microphone Influenza at Make Yr Break's April partay (The Bubble House, Philadelphia). Upon arriving to the space, I was greeted with a big hug and then reprimanded for not visiting sooner. There was some chill time with tunes provided by DJ Bunnystyle, and then we all finally got some new flavor in our earrrrrrs! I don't even have words to describe how "SO AWESOME" the performance was. I mean, if my ears could taste, they'd be like "DAMN THAT JAM WAS DELICIOUS!!"

How delicious? Well have a taste yourself! "Call Me Daddy" is rapped over the instrumental for Spank Rock's "Backyard Betty", and it's totally better than Spank Rock. If you're hungry for more after that, check out more tracks on the space, including a free download of the mixtape's title track "Microphone Influenza".

dl: IMMUZIKATION - Just Another Call With You (MGMT vs. lots) (YSI)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Immuzikation has been popular on the blogs lately. And with good reason! Mashing up Daft Punk and LCD Soundsystem with MGMT, Yelle with Weezer, Justice with Boyz II Men*, Ratatat with Enon, Jay-Z with The Postal Service...the fun just doesn't stop. This Georgia boy knows where the party's at, and I'm personally inviting all of you to crash it with this new joint he sent my way. It goes a little something like this...
  • MGMT - "Just Becuz" + Soulwax - "Another Excuse (DFA Remix)" + Prince - "When Doves Cry" + Chromeo - "Call Me Up" + Afrika Bambaataa "Planet Rock" + Stardust - "Music Sounds Better with You" = "Just Another Call with You"
"Just Becuz" is nearly five years old, recorded when MGMT were still at Wesleyan University. It's a bit dancier than most of their new stuff, yet it remains one of my favorite MGMT songs of all time. Long story short, Immuzikation is my mash-up GOD for doing this mix.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
When I received the info about Tilly and the Wall's new album, I was more excited about the distribution than the music itself. It's not that I find their tunes objectionable by any means, I swear! In fact, Tilly and the Wall fascinate me as a concept (mostly just Jamie Pressnall's tap-dance percussion), but they've never given me a total indie-boner or anything.

But maybe that will change with the kind-of-untitled album O. Kind-of-untitled? Yes. The album technically has no title, but it has been unofficially deemed O, a reference to
the oval-shaped frame which holds the cover art. Limited editions will be available with handmade prints by different artists "giving the band's fans a unique piece of art for both their album and their walls". While this method of distribution isn't "redefining the industry" in an OMG-Radiohead way, it sure gives me a ferocious art-boner. Yay, printmaking!

sensual harassment: mirror.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
I don't know diddly-hoo about John Barclay or Todd Thomas (The Fashion Brigade, Emergency Broadcast System), but I certainly do enjoy "Mirror", a song from the Brooklyn duo's latest project Sensual Harassment. I was first drawn to them by their photos on the space, in which the members' faces are consistently hidden behind two animal masks-- a pig and a crocodile/alligator (?). I'd be disappointed if I found out they perform without these costumes. Because the world needs more animals that rock.

The rocking on this song is on the verge of power-dance-emo, which somehow doesn't make me feel shameful. Even the vocals are slightly Conor Oberst-like, making me really wonder why I don't feel shameful. I don't know if their album has been officially released yet, but they worked on it with a dude who worked with The Cure and a dude that worked with Snoop Dogg. Drop it like it's hot hot hot!

track by track: trilla.

I can haz gvng u hed n Ut00b?
--------------------------------------------------------------------
-------
Welcome to Track By Track, in which I quite obviously put in my two cents about albums, um...track by track.

PRELUDE: Rick Ross is not a good rapper. I felt a need to say that before I wrote this review. What he lacks in the lyrical department, he makes up for in the swagger department. In other words, he can make really stupid shit entertaining and (usually) listenable. This provides him with the ability to outsell more-talented artists such as Erykah Badu and not-as-talented-you-really-should-retire, high-profile artists such as Janet Jackson. I am unsure whether this is a natural talent, the product of hard work, or the result of hustling every day (as opposed to hustling every other day).
  1. TRILLA INTRO: "Shoutout to Rick Ross, because I run this."-- Arguably, this is the most impressive song on the album. A list of shoutouts over a beat by J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League almost sounds like a real song. This is what I mean by swagger...though it could also be argued that this song only works because no one really cares what comes out of the mouth of Rick Ross. Kudos for shouting out himself.
  2. ALL I HAVE IN THIS WORLD (featuring Mannie Fresh): "I'm talkin' Japanese denim, money stuffed in 'em."-- I usually find Mannie Fresh rather annoying. In fact, I still kind of do. His minimal involvement on the chorus of this song is appreciated. Rick Ross, as usual, says very few things that are important or original. Despite this, the song is still enjoyable.
  3. THE BOSS (featuring T-Pain): "Always wear plastics 'cause shit happen"-- While it feels like this song hardly made a dent, this is currently the biggest Rick Ross single to date. It just goes to show that anything is possible with T-Pain. Anything.
  4. SPEEDIN' (featuring R. Kelly): "Americal idol, I got fans like Fantasia. Read between the lines or your ass like Fantasia."-- This vastly superior first single didn't make as much of a splash for some reason. By vastly superior, I mean the production from The Runners > J.R. Rotem's production on "The Boss". I guess the public thought "Vocoders > R. Kelly"?
  5. WE SHININ': "Gimme head on YouTube and then pop bottles."-- Bink!'s production on this song is more soul-tinged than the songs that lead up to this. It's okay, but nothing to write home about. Maybe it's just the annoying reference to Kanye that troubles me?
  6. MONEY MAKE ME COME (featuring EbonyLove): "She don't call them purses, bitch call em bags. I don't know the names, I know they cost some stacks."-- I'd love to say something about how problematic it is that the one female guest on this album is reduced to a materialistic caricature and not even given her own verse, but is that argument even valid against someone who refers to women as "bitch"? We can't take Rick Ross too seriously. The mere title of this song makes me giggle a little, because I imagine EbonyLove female-ejaculating in her pants every time money touches her hand. I hope she uses debit or credit, because that'd make checking out at the supermarket terribly awkward...
  7. INTERLUDE (DJ Khaled): "We are here forever."-- Wow, this was really unnecessary. I guess it gives you time to take a bathroom break?
  8. THIS IS THE LIFE (featuring Trey Songz): "It's not that I'm arrogant, I'm just extravagant."-- For some reason, I imagine that quote serving as a good line in a drag queen number. Think about it. If you add a exclamation point to that and a thumping dance beat, we're on to something. On another note, Trey Songz kind of sounds like T-Pain or Akon's understudy on this.
  9. THIS ME: "Six bitches numbers on the same napkin, now that's what I call a chain reaction."-- Damn, this song would probably better if Trey Songz were singing the hook...
  10. HERE I AM (featuring Nelly & Avery Storm): "Your last man was a chump and you can tell him I said it."-- I can't even listen to this song. Nelly? On a kind-of love song? In my head, I am pretending that the label somehow snuck Nelly onto this song at the last minute, just so I can maintain the small bit of respect I have for Rick Ross. This isn't 2002!
  11. MAYBACH MUSIC (featuring Jay-Z): Presumably, the post-interlude slump was in preparation for some awesomeness. Jay-Z and a Friends Of Distinction sample make said awesomeness happen. No matter what Jay says on this, we know it will be better than anything Ricky has said on the entire album, so we welcome him with very open arms.
  12. BILLIONAIRE: My first reaction upon hearing this track is wondering whether my iTunes accidentally switched to some unreleased music by Cassie the butterfly. Somehow J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League channels Ryan Leslie for this beat, and turns out the best Rick Ross song without a featured guest on this album (though the "Intro" could give it a run for it's money).
  13. LUXURY TAX (featuring Lil Wayne, Trick Daddy, & Young Jeezy): "And they say you ain't great until someone assasinate, and I feel like MLK."-- Don't be deceived. Rick Ross didn't spit that line. I'm sure a avid hip-hop fan could figure out who did by looking at the list of featured guests. His mere presence somehow makes this song great, and I'm not even one of his worshippers.
  14. REPPIN' MY CITY (featuring Triple C & Brisco): "Tell the truth I ain't a lover, but I fuck her like I love her"-- Though it'd probably be dismissed as a cheap effort to repeat the success of "Hustlin", I nominate this as the next Rick Ross single. The chorus is slightly addictive, the energy is perfect for the impending warmth, and I imagine that white people would totally love this. Remixes will spring up everywhere from Hoboken to Raleigh to Tulsa, in which groups of amateur or pro rappers "rep" their respective cities. Hipsters will make electro remixes and mash it up with Crystal Castles (or something like that). If any of the people who represent Rick Ross are reading this, take note.
  15. I'M ONLY HUMAN (featuring Rodney): "I'm only human. I'm a man, I make mistakes."-- There's something too sincere about this track. In fact, this sincerity is unwelcome after a four-song trek that included three of the album's best tracks. Is this really how you want to go out? That's on some soft shit like Snuggles the fabric softener bear.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
FINAL WORDS: Trilla isn't an album that you'd put on to walk your shih tzu down the street, but if your dog is considerably more bad-ass...Mr. Ross would supply a great faux-bad-ass soundtrack. This is music for pumping out of your car or dancing drunk, not reading philosophy and sipping on tea. If you keep this in mind, Trilla is a decent album. There are some inconsistencies here and there, but no one expects Rick Ross to turn out a classic album. Do they?

dl: LEONA LEWIS - Bleeding Love (Stevie Tech Nicks 2008 Live Edit) (YSI)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Am I getting old and wise? Or are the music industry's desperate attempts at marketing just becoming that obvious? I started wondering this after these Leona Lewis posters popped up on the streets of NYC (almost) immediately after her appearance on Oprah, which labeled her song "Bleeding Love" as a massive hit. Initially I thought it was a premature assessment to use the word "massive". The song only spent one week as a number one single, right? As expected, the following week found us with post-emancipation Mariah Carey tackling Leona, beating the crap out of Elvis, and blah blah blah.

A little wikipedia research revealed that I was thinking like a stupid American. "Bleeding Love" is ten times more massive than "Touch My Body" or "4 Minutes To Save The World". It's even (gasp) more massive than Flo Rida's "Low". No matter what happens to Leona in the US her international appeal steamrolls Mimi and Madge, having hit number one in over twenty-seven countries. MASSIVE. Though I guess over-exaggerating the appeal of a song wouldn't necessarily be anything new in the industry...

freekstyler: all your base are belong to ace.

dl: FREEKSTYLER - All Your Base Are Belong To Ace (YSI) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Almost every week, I get an e-mail from someone who claims they're a fan of this blog, and almost every week this is from someone who BCC'd the same message to dozens of other blogs. However, this wasn't the case this week. My ego was stroked by a self-declared "young dancer/designer in Montreal. Fucking with music on the side." He not only claimed to be a fan of ITMS!!, but he was also able to back it up by citing a notable favorite of his-- the Swedish dance-jams of Animal Keyboard, posted back in July 2007. Now, it goes without saying that you don't have to say you love my blog to get on this site. I listen to everything that's sent to me, and I almost always post what I like. But I couldn't help but feel warm and fuzzy inside after this delightful note.

The young man who wrote this goes by the name of Freekstyler, and creates mash-ups but as he says..."
not in the traditional sense. It's more along the lines of Girl Talk, if you know his stuff*. Recycling and amalgamating sound to create something fresh." The results are some rather infectious party records that will undoubtedly get individuals with various tastes out on the floor. Girl Talk is an excellent reference point, but Freekstyler leans a tad bit more into current pop, hip-hop, and top 40. But he doesn't forget about the classics. A great moment happens in "Floorcrusher" when an acappella of The Jackson 5's "ABC" merges with Janet Jackson's "Luv". It's like a Jackson family reunion without Rebbie, LaToya, or any fighting.

Oddly, my favorite Freekstyler creation wasn't included in the e-mail he sent. It may or may not involve Kelis and Ace of Base engaging in a tango that they were meant to dance.

  • Samples used for "Floorcrusher"-- Beenie Man, Beyoncé, Black Eyes Peas, Bobby Valentino, Christina Aguilera, DMX, Fergie, Fort Minor, Gwen Stefani, J-Kwon, Janet Jackson, Jay-Z, Justice, Justin Timberlake, Kelly Rowland, Lil' Flip, Queen, Spice Girls, T.I., The Jackson 5
* I'll forgive him for not realizing that I posted about Mr. Gillis, given that it was back in June 2006. I don't think anyone has been reading this blog that long.

track by track: still da baddest.

Shortly after entering the scene, this "hoe" was metaphorically "killed" by Trina.

Welcome to Track By Track, in which I quite obviously put in my two cents about albums, um...track by track.
  1. INTRO: "Ass? Nope. Not big enough."-- In this hugely unnecessary opening skit, we witness the construction and unveiling of the so-called "baddest bitch alive". Unfortunately for Trina, it only serves as a reminder of how processed her whole persona is.
  2. STILL DA BADDEST: "Don't nann bitch want it."-- When Trina tells us that "the bitch is back", I can't help but wonder where she went in the first place. It's only been three years since she's been "gone", and even if Glamorest Life was a rather forgettable album...I'm pretty sure that her biggest hit, the Kelly Rowland-assisted "Here We Go", is still fresh on everyone's minds. With that said, my biggest problem with this song is the lack of "badness". She doesn't even mention her pussy once!
  3. KILLING YOU HOES: "I got the best pussy out."-- Ah, I knew it'd be less than five minutes into the album before Trina started talking about her vagina, but I have to admit that I was a little worried for a second. This is the hardest and "baddest" track so far, but the instrumental is a little too laid back to back it up. It's more Snoop Dogg than Trina. Can I get a damn club banger?
  4. SINGLE AGAIN: "Sex in a cockpit. No love, I was just another object."-- J-Roc's production on this track makes for one of the most full-sounding tracks on the album. While it turned out to be a commercial flop, I can understand why it was chosen as the first single for the album.
  5. LOOK BACK AT ME (featuring Killer Mike): "Smell it like a flower, my pussy is a rose. Come a little closer, I wanna fuck your nose."-- These two lines come directly after a reference to golden showers. She successfully out-nasties her male guest Killer Mike, who relies far too much on name-dropping other rappers and celebrities. I don't know how he got away with saying, "Ass like Trina, face like Mya" on Trina's own song. Did Trina seriously not consider that a back-handed compliment?
  6. I GOT A THANG FOR YOU (featuring Keyshia Cole): "Feel so right that this can't be wrong."-- The selection of "I Got A Thang For You" as the second single almost makes me physically sick. It's blatantly an attempt by her label to match the success of "Here We Go", but unfortunately it's one of the worst songs on the album. Trite lyrics, middle school crush vibe, and an absence of anything "baddest bitch"...I can't go for that! Making it even worst, Keyshia Cole's carbon-copy Mary J. Blige vocals are heavily underutilized, to the point that Cole sounds utterly subdued and bored.
  7. I GOT A BOTTLE (featuring Missy Elliott): "So full, so far gone. Forgot where I parked and lost my iPhone."-- It goes without saying that I prefer when Trina has bottles rather than thangs, though I do appreciate the hilarious back-to-back placement of the two "I Got A..." songs. Even if it's just a mindless party song about getting drunk, this is hands-down the best and most memorable song on the album. Thank heavens for Missy Elliott.
  8. I WISH I NEVER MET YOU (featuring Shonie): "So now it's to the left, to the left. And everything you own is on the porch, n---a step."-- This song was over for me as soon as she made a reference to Beyonce's "Irreplaceable". Also, who the hell is this Shonie character? They would have saved some money putting her on "I Got A Thang For You" instead of Keyshia Cole.
  9. CLEAR IT OUT: "Media vs. celebrities, it's outrageous."-- This is like Trina's unneeded version of Britney Spears' "Piece of Me". I'm sorry if people are hating on you, Trina. Maybe instead of making a song about it, you should just start being a nicer person? Okay, I know that's a lame request. But if you're going to be the baddest bitch alive, you need to stop complaining that people don't like you. It's part of the job description to be hated, so get used to it!
  10. STOP TRAFFIC (featuring Pitbull): "Green means go, yellow means slow, red means stop, now drop to the floor."-- With a title like "Stop Traffic", I expected this song to be the next "Pull Over". Unfortunately, this song is too slow to meet those expectations. And um, isn't this beat weirdly similar to "So Krispy"?
  11. PHONE SEXX (featuring Qwote): "I know he was so amazed to hear me cum on the phone."-- Qwote really steals the show on this track, turning out some baby-making lines similar to J. Holiday's Bed or The Dream's "Falsetto". Someone must have had some serious sedatives in the studio because Trina sounds just as subdued as Keyshia did on "I Got A Thang For You". In some ways, this adds a soft, sexy edge to the track. I imagine that this song will give someone a boner. Someone.
  12. HOT COMMODITY (featuring Rick Ross): "Up in this pussy feel better than the lottery."-- I find this chorus so hilarious because it neglects to mention that the lottery only feels good when you win it. I mean, of course being up in Trina's va-hey-hey is better than a losing lottery ticket. Even so, "Hot Commodity" is definitely a song to bump in your hoopty with the windows down.
FINAL WORDS: While you may think I'm being unnecessarily harsh on the Diamond Princess, but I assure you that it's only out of love. I don't care if she says that she put 150% into this album and stepped up ten notches. I want her to put in 250% and step up fifty notches. With a title like "Still Da Baddest", Trina gave herself the opportunity to show us just why she's the "baddest bitch alive" and just didn't take it.

My friend Petra once said, "
That's how you know Michael [Jackson] isn't bad. If he was, he would just say it once and then kick the next person who asked." Same goes for Trina. If she were actually bad, she'd make a concept album about her pussy. But right now, I'm not convinced yet.

RECOMMENDATIONS: "Look Back At Me", "I Got A Bottle", "Hot Commodity"
