poom: very much in love

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Its been a long two weeks for me, juggling political coverage for my day job with keeping my sanity in the evening. Throw in updating this here blog all last week and we've got a recipe for exhaustion. I'm sleeping in today but Saturday I'll be out and ready to party. POOM will be my pre-party soundtrack. This is epic Sebastian-Tellier-doing-it-large-with-Ed-Banger kind of stuff that I'd drop early in the club and have fifty people asking me what it was. They've got 20 Myspace friends but a dance video up on Youtube already, so catch this one ground floor and all that. And the bonus jamz for today show a less poppy side, all tense headache house that's brilliant in spite of its distortion and not because of it.

ugk & akon: hard as hell.

COCK!!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
dl: UGK f/ AKON - Hard As Hell (Z - YSI)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
In my entire high school and college career, I managed to work at least one phallic reference into almost every art history paper I wrote. So when a mainstream hip-hop single about penises pops up in my inbox, I am not going to pass up an opportunity to write about it!

When I first spotted "Hard As Hell" in my inbox, my mind didn't immediately go to a sexual place. Being that this is the first single off of UGK's new album UGK For Life, I assumed that the group would go for something "deeper" after Pimp C's death. It's easy to imagine that a song called "Hard As Hell" could be about, well...life.

But no! It's about penises and cumming on faces. My favorite part is when Akon adlibs "in your eye". This ain't no "International Player's Anthem", but I wouldn't be offended if it were bumping out of car windows for the rest of the summer.

lloyd: ross hogg remix.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Much like Idolator and Vulture, I'm pushing for the Lil Wayne-assisted Lloyd jam "Girls All Around The World" to be a strong contender for song of the summer. Unless it's a late bloomer, chances that it'll be able to trump crap like this are slim, but I'd like to think that Ross Hogg's mix might provide the extra bit of fuel that it needs. This version's reggae-tinged vibe propels the track into a direction that's more friendly for your parents' annual summer BBQ. Just sandwich this between some Bob Marley and Jimmy Buffet, and we should easily get the middle-age crowd sipping margaritas to this jam. Even if it appears that Lloyd's fans on iTunes don't dig this track, I think the robot-vixens in his video are directly correlated with Rihanna in silver body-paint, no? This still has a chance to become the song of the summer. Really! Hey! It could happen.

cof cof: who said party?

dl: COF COF - Forbidden Cocktail (YSI)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
"How could you not love a band that lists 'BEER BEFORE MAKING MUSIC' under 'Influences' on their MySpace?"--Kate Richardson of Idolator

I mean, really? How can anyone not love Cof Cof? "Forbidden Cocktail" is like the less annoying version of every song about drinking that frat boys and "Ashleys" sing along to at bars. It's a little bit CSS, maybe even a little Cibo Matto. And it gets EVEN BETTER.

Cof Cof's 8-song debut, Who Said Party?, is now available as a free download through their page on the space. Not downloading this would be like missing the free ice cream cone day at your local ice cream shoppe. Except Cof Cof won't even make you fat, because there aren't any calories in music. In fact, regularly dancing to these songs will aid in moving towards that perfect swimsuit body you've been dreaming about.

itms!! mini playlist: bathing booties.

It may be May, but it's not too soon to get ready for the beach. Bathing suit? Check. Sun-tan lotion? Check. Towel? Check. Music? Don't worry. I got your back on this one.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
POP THE FISH - Chez Ta Soeur (YSI): Considering that I don't know any French, I know very little about the lyrical content of this song (other than the fact that the title translates to "with your sister"). For sake of maintaining a theme, let's pretend it's about making sandcastles with your little sister. If that doesn't work, at least the word "fish" is in the artist's name? You know, fish totally live in water and shit. Pssh, gimme a break. The songs just need to sound like summer, and this electro-pop jam has "fun in the mothafuckin' sun" written all over it. (SPACE IT - HYPE IT)

BMX* - War (YSI): You steal two fun noodles from some ugly kid and challenge your crush to a duel on a dock, because this beach apparently has a dock. Frustrated by your inability to knock them off with your foam weapon, you just push them off. Now everything is awesome. Your crush looks smokin' hot when wet, you barely broke a sweat, and you are the cheater your momma told you never wins. (SPACE IT - HYPE IT)

MGMT - Just Becuz (YSI): Despite not breaking a sweat, the noodle-fight leaves you quite thirsty. You head over to a concession stand to grab a water, and then you notice that they have ice cream. You worry for a second that it'll go straight to your hips, but then you think "Bump that, this will be delicious." You get a vanilla cone, and you ask for lots of jimmies. Because you are totally from the Midwest and don't like the word "sprinkles". (BUY IT - SITE IT - SPACE IT - HYPE IT - WIK IT)

BRANDY - I Wanna Be Down (Norrit remix) (YSI)**: While waiting thirty minutes prior to swimming, the best '90s R&B song ever pops into your head. You think about how much you want to be down with your crush, and you get a metaphorical boner. I say metaphorical solely because you might have a va-hey-hey. If you don't, then you totally got a real boner. Embarrassing! (SPACE IT - HYPE IT)

MATT AND LIL KIM - 5k, Mothafuckah (YSI): You start to feel guilty about that ice cream cone, so you join a game of volleyball. You realize that Naturi Naughton, formerly of 3LW fame, is on the other team. You start trash-talking her like, "Haha, remember when you were famous?" and then she tells you that she'll be playing Lil Kim in the upcoming film Notorious. You start to feel foolish, but everything gets better when your team kicks her team's ass. You try to get your teammates to chant "Your Playas Can't Really Play" at her, but they don't really get what you're talking about. (VIRB IT)

OLD GOLD - God Almighty (YSI): After so much physical activity, you decide to get your swim on. While drying off, you can't believe your eyes. The volleyball court has been taken over by a gaggle of hot chicks in brightly-colored bikinis. They're pretty good at volleyball, but then they start wrestling, trying to rip one another's bathing suits off, and making out. You feel really stupid when you realize that they're filming for a beer commercial. (BUY IT - SPACE IT)

LADYHAWKE - Back Of The Van (YSI)***: Your crush is listening to Usher and starts joking around, singing "I wanna make looooove on this beach, (ay) on this beach, (ay) on this beach". You're like, "For real?" They say, "4 real, 4 real!" And then you make out. FOR SERIOUS! But you don't make love on the beach because there are other people around, you don't want sand in your butts, and the phrase "making love" gets you both uncomfortable. (SITE IT - SPACE IT - HYPE IT)

whatfor: call that girl.

dl: WHATFOR - Call That Girl (YSI)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Whatfor (not to be confused with THIS Whatfor) was described to me as "sort of like The Kinks collaborating with Rufus Wainwright". I wasn't sure what to think of that description, but the debut album Sooner Late Than Never will be released on May 20th through Science of Sound records. I'm generally a sucker for anything Science of Sound releases-- Sleeping In The Aviary, His & Her Vanities, She Is So Beautiful/She Is So Blonde...so even if I wasn't down with The Kinks and Rufus Wainwright getting down, I was still excited to hear this album.

"Call That Girl" was an immediate standout track, possibly because I am in love with short songs. Other possibilities? It's a fucking amazing pop song. It's amazing to the degree that it makes me want to compare Whatfor to The Beatles. And you know what? I hate when bloggers compare things to The Beatles, because the 1964 Beatles are almost indistinguishable from the 1970 Beatles. But I don't know enough about The Beatles (yeah I said it!) to make that distinction. Hell, maybe this isn't like The Beatles at all*. Maybe YOU are The Beatles.

And maybe this delightful indie-pop-rock album is made for summer. Listening to it makes me feel like this, except with more volleyball. And I'd actually be good at volleyball so I'd singlehandedly kick the other team's ass. And then sharks would eat all the people I don't like. You know?

ghosts & liars: we'll carry on.

GHOSTS & LIARS are an indie-pop quintet from Tacoma, WA. The band is a new project by several members of Some By Sea.

I got a friend request from them on VIRB, and immediately accepted it because (I'm friendly and) my narcissism propels me to desire having a lot of internet friends. Before friending them though, I decided I'd take a listen to a tune or two. There were two demos and two live songs on their page. I clicked the first one (a demo). Needless to say, I was pleasantly surprised. VERY-SUPER pleasantly surprised. So VERY-SUPER pleasantly surprised that I'm writing a post about these peeps.

"We'll Carry On" is an excellent demo-- a delightful, upbeat folk-pop song that could be heard on The O.C. if it still existed. Some might consider that an insult, but what I mean to say is that this is a damn catchy piece of indie-pop. Basically, you'll be thumping your foot, humming along, and swaying your head to this one. Or maybe I'll just be doing that. Whatever. I think you will like this. It's a summer jam that you could blast out your car window or simply lie around the porch to. "Sunsets on the Sidenotes" is just as good (possibly better).

For those concerned with cred and name-dropping, Ghosts & Liars have played a show with Anathallo and will be playing in Tacoma with Rocky Votolato on July 20th. Members of the band like Neutral Milk Hotel, Bishop Allen, Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, Decibully, Lucky Soul, Queens of the Stone Age, and Rilo Kiley. Cred is stupid. This music is good. Got it?
