laura gibson: beasts of seasons.

dl: LAURA GIBSON - Spirited (alt)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Laura Gibson's latest offering is the perfect album for citizens of snowglobes. Beasts of Seasons, produced by Tucker Martine (Sufjan Stevens, The Decemberists), finds Gibson prancing through an acoustic and ethereal landscape like a less jarring, slightly less majestic Joanna Newsom. Everyone needs that one album to listen to while curled up in blankets, and you'd be damn smart to choose this as yours.

dl: NIAMAJ - Yagotta (alt)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
This week's edition of Hump-Hop Hooray is short but sweet. A man's got to sleep, ya heard?

Um, why haven't a lot of people paid more attention to the Plug Music Label? I'm pretty obsessed with Niamaj's 2005 song "Yagotta" with it's ol' skool didactic rhymes and jazzy Tribe Called Quest vibe. Based on Niamaj's space profile, it seems like he's no longer working with the label, but I'd honestly be satisfied if this was the only song he ever recorded. The majority of his new material is a little harder edged, not necessarily my cup of tea. With that said, it's nice to see him experimenting with different sounds. Do you, Niamaj! Get that check.

poptastic: hold me.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
I should say that I extremely enjoy Poptastic as a concept. It sounds good on paper--a co-ed group channeling the '90s boy-band era sound and electronically mangling the resulting songs beyond recognition. Awesome. I like to indulge in the occasional shameful boy-band tune. And if I have a legitimate excuse to embrace this indulgence in a way that involving some artistic merit and a little less shame, then sign me up! That's the thing. I want to love Poptastic so much, but some of the songs are a little too mangled for my liking. With that said, I need to give Poptastic major props for their hilarious website, where you can download desktop wallpaper's of your favorite band member that resemble fan-made High School Musical livejournal icons.

mastermynd: wow.

dl: MASTERMYND - WOW (Z)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
On first glance, I wouldn't pay much attention to MasterMynd for the simple fact that I'm not a big fan of his name. The mid-word capitalization combined with the misspelling of "mind" just screamed amateur to me. Mama always told me to not judge a book by it's cover, but she never told me not to judge a rapper by their name.

With that said, MasterMynd's latest EP A Wonderful Mynd finds the Jersey rapper rhyming over productions by 9th Wonder with a swagger recalling Lupe Fiasco (if Lupe weren't such a tool). Occasionally the flow can get a little lost in 9th Wonder's laid-back productions, but Mynd's full potential is clear on "WOW. The concept of the song is the standard "I'm doing your girl better than you can", but there's a consistency that doesn't scream amateur to any degree. Basically, this isn't your typical myspace rapper bullshit. This is true emcee shit.

azeda booth: in flesh tones.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
It's easy to forget about the sad, slow songs when it's summertime. I feel like my ears and body instinctually crave upbeat jams that correlate with the sunny weather, barbecues, and beach-time. Even if it's a cloudy day, I'm grill-less, or I get to the beach so little that I still look Casper the Friendly Ghost's first-cousin...there's some sort of innate tendency to stray away from what I like to call "indoor songs"---the slower, sadder, occasionally experimental tunes I listen to while curled up under a blanket on my couch, reading or drinking a hot cup of tea.

This explains why it's taken me so long to write about Azeda Booth's debut album In Flesh Tones, which was released on Absolutely Kosher back in late July. It's not the type of music to fit in my playlist between BMX and Passion Pit, yet it's one of the best albums that came out this summer. It just, well, shouldn't have come out this summer. The album's opening track "Ran" has managed to get a good amount of hype since the release. But if that's the only song on your iTunes, you're seriously screwing yourself. The musical arrangements paired with Jordon Hossack's scary-ass "I can't believe it's not (but) her" falsetto throw you into a forest of emotional ambiguity. I can hardly understand a word he's saying, I'm not really sure if it's all necessarily sad, and it all makes me want to bust out into some modern dance moves that incorporate a dash of delicious movement.*

This isn't an album made for shoving hot dogs and potato salad into your face, so don't let your summertime musical instincts get in the way when sampling this track. Even if you have to wait until December to grab a copy of In Flesh Tones, you won't regret the purchase.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

* I love that Eiko Otake's wikipedia entry includes this sequence of sentences: "She is teaching classes in both the dance and east asian studies departments in addition to intermittently organizing delicious movement workshops. They love to dance!" More importantly, I love Eiko Otake.

pink nasty: untitled dog song.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Miss Jackson if you're nasty? Or maybe you like it Nastia. Or maybe you should just listen to some Pink Nasty.

Sara Beck, the waffle-loving young woman who goes by the alias of Pink Nasty, has just liberated two new demos on her space. There appears to be some uncertainty about whether they'll make it onto the follow-up to her album Mold The Gold. I'm rooting for "Untitled Dog Song" to get itself a title, as well as a place on the album. Why? Because it's a song about getting drunk and buying a dog. 'Nuff said.

susan susan: 7 things (miley cyrus cover).

dl: SUSAN SUSAN - 7 Things (Miley Cyrus cover) (Z - YSI)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Since I don't have a TV in my apartment, I occasionally like to indulge in watching some awful reality television with my parents when I'm visiting in the Jerz. This guilty pleasure reached an extreme low when I got hooked on Here Come The Newlyweds, yet it mostly results in watching a few episodes of American Idol or So You Think You Can Dance? every now and then. While Idol is essentially nothing more than a glorified karaoke contest, I enjoy watching it and debating with my father over the cultural relevance of Carrie Underwood and Fantasia Barrino. However, I was not enjoying Idol when this happened...

"Wow. That's pretty awesome. That song could be on a movie soundtrack right now. It really could. And who knows? Maybe it just will."---Paula Abdul commenting on David Cook's cover of Mariah Carey's "Always Be My Baby"

This is the performance she was commenting on. BLECK! But while we're on the subject of cover songs that could appear on movie soundtracks, let's talk about Denver duo Susan Susan's cover of Miley Cyrus tune "7 Things". Oh sure, it's not like this cover could pop up in an episode of Grey's Anatomy, but I have a very clear image of an imaginary (kind of lame) indie movie with Jena Malone in it. She plays an emotionally unstable teenager, and in this particular scene she is riding a red bicycle down a country road after a particularly embarrassing encounter with her love interest. The song stops when her bike crashes, and as she's lying on the ground she experiences some sort of epiphany on the depth of life. Then she cries and shit.

You see, I had a total crush on The Mae Shi's cover of the awesomely self-referential Cyrus jam "See You Again", but it seemed too self-aware that it's an ironic indie cover. I can't quite tell how sincere dear ol' Billy and Lindsay's "7 Things" cover is, but as trite and Paula Abdul as this sounds---they really make the song their own without throwing away too many aspects of the original, right down to the introductory "Sha"s. They manage to take a bratty tween love anthem and turn it into something quirky but not quirky-annoying. And just when you thought it couldn't get any better, they bring out a brief vocal mash-up with Carly Simon's "You're So Vain", likely referencing Nick Jonas. Maybe I'm just being Miley. Or maybe this is awesome.

The cover was created for the Denver Show & Tell Project, in which a pool of Denver "bands/musicians/noise makers/friends" come together to make songs within certain guidelines. I believe July's theme must have been to cover a top 10 pop song, as you can listen on the page to Denver locals' reinterpretations of Rihanna, Katy Perry, Coldplay, Natasha Bedingfield, Leona Lewis, and Usher. This months theme is "collaboration song", and Susan Susan appears to be on board to contribute once again. Apparently they're sort of obligated to contribute because they created it. But as they say "not obligated in a bad way, because it's fun". If you're in Denver and happen to make sounds with your mouth or instruments, you should experience such fun!

n.e.r.d.: lazer gun carrying.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
I still haven't formed an opinion on N.E.R.D.'s third album Seeing Sounds, mostly because I know that it will never come close to being as classic (on a personal level) as their first. Spine Magazine posted a UK bonus track called "Lazer Gun Carrying", and I can't help but thinking after a few listens that it's better than I thought anything on the album was after a few listens. One thing's for sure. This shit is better than that song they did with Santogold and Julian Casablancas. No hatin' though! Santi sounds great on that track...

I'm glad I'm not the only one who doesn't like that Holy Fuck remix. After my last post, an internet acquaintance commented back, "The Holy Fuck remix sucks the holy out of my fuck." AMEN to that!

If you're wary of how far behind Dgenetics is from grabbing the crown, let me call your attention to another ITMS!! fave that's in the running-- Azeda Booth. As I write this post, they are just shy of the top ten, and they're only 5923 votes away from taking Holy Fuck holy-fucking down!

In I-promise-this-is-the-last-Radiohead-remix-I-post news, Azeda Booth has just finished recording their first full-length album. It will be released this spring on Absolutely Kosher Records, and it's almost guaranteed to be better than any remix of "Nude" that you've ever heard.

After developing several dance numbers with the My Little Pony Dance Studio this past weekend (followed by setting said dances to Khia's "My Neck, My Back"), my friend Emily brought up the video for Little Dragon's "Twice". We wound up watching it multiple times because it was so beautiful. The video is directed by Johannes Nyholm, the man responsible for videos of The Knife's "Heartbeats" and Jenny Wilson's "Let My Shoes Lead Me Forward". The puppetry is done by the band themselves with the help of Elias Araya, Aime Hellrand, Henrik Malmgren, Andreas Korsár and Kurt Lightner. If you haven't seen this, you need to watch it!

tilly and the wall: cacophony.

dl: TILLY AND THE WALL - Cacophony (YSI)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
When I received the info about Tilly and the Wall's new album, I was more excited about the distribution than the music itself. It's not that I find their tunes objectionable by any means, I swear! In fact, Tilly and the Wall fascinate me as a concept (mostly just Jamie Pressnall's tap-dance percussion), but they've never given me a total indie-boner or anything.

But maybe that will change with the kind-of-untitled album O. Kind-of-untitled? Yes. The album technically has no title, but it has been unofficially deemed O, a reference to
the oval-shaped frame which holds the cover art. Limited editions will be available with handmade prints by different artists "giving the band's fans a unique piece of art for both their album and their walls". While this method of distribution isn't "redefining the industry" in an OMG-Radiohead way, it sure gives me a ferocious art-boner. Yay, printmaking!

dl: THE LADY TIGRA f/ MC LYTE - They Stole My Radio (YSI)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
I forgot to mention before that my weekend involved a trip to The Pink Tea Cup, a restaurant that once propelled Whoopi Goldberg to say "Honey, come get some of this food, it's good y'all." And while I'd say that you'd be an April FOOL to not take Whoopi's endorsement seriously, I must admit the food was nowhere near as exciting as the mere possibility that I was sitting in the same seat as some of hip-hop's most influential ladies. Mary J. Blige! Queen Latifah! MC Lyte!*

And this awkward segue leads me to The Lady Tigra's solo album Please Mr. Boombox. For those who are unfamiliar, The Lady Tigra is half of the Miami-Bass duo L'Trimm (known mostly for their hit "Cars That Go Boom"). For those who are familiar, can you explain why so many of the bloggers who posted "Bass On The Bottom" neglected to mention that motherfuckin' MC Lyte brought it on (all or nothing) by contributing a verse to Tigra's album? I guess I have to make up for their mistakes.**

red wire black wire: dying or insane.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
In my youth, I was always scared of New York City. I learned to love it upon moving/working here, but there are some days where I feel like I'm fading here. This isn't a foreign feeling. I've felt it at college, certain jobs, and elsewhere. I'm aware that it's not a particularly original or revolutionary feeling. We've all been in those places in which we feel our current location or situation is eating away at our soul, right?

Well, Red Wire Black Wire's "Dying Or Insane" puts a tune beyond these emotions, with a simple refrain of "I think this place is killing me slowly, slowly". It may sound a little too emo for your tastes (perhaps it is), but who doesn't feel a little emo every now and then? With that said, Red Wire Black Wire describes their sound as "the saddest dance party". We all know that adding a bit of dance to your sadness always makes you feel less pathetic (think certain songs by The Cure, etc), and the results here are impeccable.

"Dying Or Insane" is among the less-upbeat songs on RWBW's debut Compass EP, joined by "Bloodline" (seemingly prepped for their unlikely country/folk crossover). The remaining three songs, including the booming title track "Compass", bump out the beats and pump out the tears. Word on the street (aka the internet) is that their live show is quite the sight. If you're in NYC, you can catch them at Club Midway (25 Avenue B, between 2nd and 3rd) on March 21st. That's Good Friday yall, and I can't think of a better way to commemorate the crucifixion of Jesus than dancing to some electro-pop jams.

the terrordactyls: long live the party cover.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Upon first hearing The Terrordactyls, I felt guilty that my first thought was, "Hello, Juno soundtrack!" My guilt was decreased by a recent promo e-mail I received, which included the heading, "If you loved Juno, you'll love The Terrordactyls." I then slapped myself in the face for my stupidity and failure to realize what was right in front of my nose. "Devices" features Kimya Dawson, and the majority of the songs on the Juno soundtrack are either Dawson's or based around her music. This would be why I got such a Juno/Moldy Peaches vibe.

While my sole problem with Juno was it's lack of shame for whoring it's soundtrack (a la Garden State), I must admit with no hint of irony that it's a superb soundtrack. Some found it annoying musically, some found it annoying because it made songs they love or previously loved "uncool". These individuals are entitled to these opinions (despite the latter being supremely lame and predictable), but I have a soft spot for it all. Shit is mad cute!

I suppose I had to get that off my chest for one simple reason-- My comparison of The Terrordactyls to the Juno soundtrack is in NO WAY an insult. In fact, I can't even fathom why I ever felt guilty for my initial thought/comparison. Their self-titled album is so impeccably heartwarming. Few of the songs are over three minutes in length, catering to my ADD nature. And there are kazoos!

If that isn't enough to convince you, how about a cover of Andrew WK? The Terrordactyls party so hard that the man himself has chimed in-- "I'm honored that you decided to cover my 'Long Live The Party' song and I enjoyed your version very much. I could've never imagined the arrangement you recorder, and I was delighted at the effect. Again, thank you...No matter what, let's all continue to make music and enjoy every moment of this process that is life. Never let down and long live the party." Is anyone else inspired? Who wants to funnel beers together and enjoy every moment of this process that is life?

tyskerhar: interplanetarian tai chi.

d/l: TYSKERHAR - Interplanetarian Tai Chi (YSI)
---------------------------------------------------------------
The facts are these: Tyskerhar is an electro duo from Berlin, a cute Asian chick and a dude with a laptop. I found them while browsing last.fm, even though they were featured three times on BIGSTEREO since March. However, I was lucky to miss them because otherwise my ears might not have collided with "Interplanetarian Tai Chi". This tune is a tad bit mellower and weirder than those that were posted by Travis, and no diggity...it's my favorite.

But there's nothing wrong with the dirtier dance-rap tunes the group pops out. A prime example of this is "C Pop", which I was going to say reminds me of Uffie's "Pop the Glock", but I realized that there was one big difference-- I actually like this song. I suppose I shouldn't mention how it reminds me of this song too? No, I shouldn't. But I did.

I'm a little baffled about why these kids aren't a bigger deal. Tyskerhar writes on their space, "$$$ If you own a label you should sign us and make us all billionaires. $$$" Can someone please take that advice? Now? I need Tyskerhar performing in a venue near me. NOW!

hello, blue roses: shadow falls.

HELLO, BLUE ROSES just may be the lamest selection for my return to the world of aural-blogging.

A quick glance at Hype Machine leads me to believe that I wasn't the only one who got an indie-boner when "Shadow Falls" popped into the ol' digi-box. To sum the nine posts...Hello, Blue Roses is a duo of IRL boos Sydney Vermont (Bonaparte) and Dan Bejar (The New Pornographers, Destroyer, Swan Lake). Their album is out through Locust Music on January 22, 2007. Something about harsh pastoral '80s reality, blah blah. It's pretty.

Honestly, that's all you really need to know about this song. It's fucking pretty. Winter is approaching and if it's getting chilly in your parts, I strongly recommend wrapping yourself in a blanket and listening to this song on repeat. Cuddling is suggested. Moping about having no one to cuddle with is encouraged (when necessary).

I wish I could say more about this song given that I've been replaying it for a few weeks, but nothing more really needs to be said. Pretty pretty pretty.

she is so beautiful/she is so blonde.

SHE IS SO BEAUTIFUL/SHE IS SO BLONDE is the solo project of Elliott Kozel, the guitarist of Sleeping in the Aviary. Much like Cars and Trains, this is exactly the type of music I like. But in a totally different way.

I want to call it "atmospheric" but any time I hear that word describing music, it turns me off more than a herpes-ridden vagina dentata. Which is a lot. So to save you from such trouble, let me just tell you a story about this album:

Once upon a time, I received three packages. One contained several promo mixtapes. Another contained an album by an extremely offensive white rapper with a weak flow. And then there was She Is So Beautiful/She Is So Blonde, a self-titled album by a member of a band I already knew I liked. Given that my iPod/CD boombox had been stolen by my older sister so she could play Wonderpets for my nephew while he falls asleep, I had no way to play this disk. So I stole my shit back. Sewiously.

I suppose I could have just listened to the CD on my computer, right? Wrong. I was stuck in my basement cleaning off a shelf full of jewel cases from albums I have purchased since I was 13 years old. This process reminded me of looking through a stack of elementary school yearbooks-- reminiscing about how something so stupid meant so much to me back then, regretting my mistaken purchases, and reveling in the music that guided me through my teenage years. As I pushed aside my water-logged liner notes to Sisqo's *second* album Return of the Dragon, it suddenly occurred to me-- the music playing behind me was perfect for this moment. I savored it. And then I had to pee, so I paused it and listened to more later. THE END.

After several listening sessions of She Is So Beautiful/She Is So Blonde, I came to a conclusion that it was an amazing album for doing things. This is incredibly vague and makes it sound as if I am accusing the album of being nothing more than fabulous background music, but no. I actually feel a need to do things while listening to this album...it's like my personal aural adderall. Is that weird?

She Is So Beautiful/She Is So Blonde will be released November 6, 2007 on Science of Sound. Perhaps it will make you want to do things too.

cars and trains: my birthday present to myself.

CARS AND TRAINS is exactly the type of music I like.

I'm a big fan of the undefined genre of semi-experimental folksy electronic indie stuff. This is the type of music I listen to while making art. There's a sort of peacefulness to it, paired with a chaotic element that mirrors my mind's unruly creative process.

What makes cars and trains even more appealing to me is that I can see a bit of myself in Tom Filepp, the man behind the many instruments or sound-making devices that create this music. Filepp spent high school screaming in hardcore/metal bands. He later broadened his musical interests to include hip-hop, many types of electronic music, and folk, such as Guthrie, Seeger, Dylan, etc. I like to think of my pre-teen self who refused to listen to anything but hip-hop until 10th grade when a friend of mine paved the way for my obsession with angsty emo music. And then...well, I just listened to a lot of different stuff. I guess it's considered common for teenagers to delve into subcultures based on a certain genre of music they listen to, only to realize when they're a bit older that they were stupid to limit themselves. But for some reason, this common ground makes me like this guy more.

Filepp will be releasing his new album Rusty String in the near future. You can listen to two tracks from the album below. "Fake Plastic Guns" has been said to have "a bunch of kind of crazy childhood sort of stuff in it." As someone who is slowly becoming an actual adult, I love kind of crazy childhood sort of stuff. Happy 22nd birthday to me.

the morning benders: ronettes cover.

THE MORNING BENDERS are apparently a big deal?

I've been so wrapped up in pop and hip-hop lately that I've forgotten about those groups of people with instruments who sing sometimes-- bands. The Morning Benders are a band. And they have been getting serious blog love since over a year ago.

But it's never too late to show some love. I just got their cover of The Ronettes' "Why Don't They Let Us Fall In Love?" in my inbox, and while I can't say it converted me to a groupie of The Morning Benders immediately...it had me craving more. What impresses me most about their sound is that they manage to channel the feeling of 1960s pop music without trying too hard. As I go from listening to their cover to "Grain of Salt", I imagine Ronnie Spector taking a turn at covering them.
