pop the fish: chez ta soeur.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is the type of thing that makes me wonder why I ever draw anything other than anthropomorphic puppies in costumes. And as simple as this doodle is, I couldn't help but wonder who would ever be worthy of this awesomeness. WHO??

The answer arrived in my inbox shortly after finishing the doodle. BoomcarJosee (whose blog is quite outstanding) sent a note of love for Pop The Fish's "Chez Ta Soeur", along with a basic translation of the lyrics:
"I really like the song 'Chez Ta Soeur' by Pop The Fish, so I guess it's only fair that I translate it a little for you. French isn't my native language so I'm not 100% sure if I got it completely right. I believe the song is about a guy who regularly goes to a friends (female) house to watch television in her room. The problem is that his friends sister is always with them... And of course the guy wants to be alone with his girl. So he says: 'demande a ta soeur de sortir de ton lit'. Which means as much as: 'Ask your sister to leave your bed'. In the end of the song, the sister falls asleep in front of the tv and the two lovers go to the sisters room to do some dirty stuff (that's my interpretation :)). But they get caught by the sister and than she finally understands what is going on...I'm not completely sure, but that should be about it :)"
I'm surprised once again that no one else has picked up on Pop The Fish, granted that I agree with Travis at
BIGSTEREO's assessment that bloggers are lazy and tend to stick to their inboxes. It's not like I'm saying I'm a tastemaker and all you bitches should have me on your RSS, but I somehow stumbled across this amazing lad from Normandy with little effort. Is there any possible reason that hundreds of other bloggers have overlooked him?

This isn't some sort of delusional love. As someone who is guilty of occasionally checking how songs they post are received on
Hype Machine, I can tell you that "Chez Ta Soeur" was the third most popular song on my Bathing Booties mini-playlist, falling short of MGMT and BMX while beating out Ladyhawke (!?!), Old Gold, and Norrit's remix of Brandy. Not that these statistics necessarily mean anything. But you know what does mean something? That time when I had "Chez Ta Soeur" as my song on the space, and at least five different friends left comments or messages stating how much they loved it. And you know what else means something? Someone e-mailing you with a translation because they like a song so much. And dedicating a doodle of an anthropomorphic puppy in a costume! That is love, and if you other bloggers never know it, it's probably because you're not listening to Pop The Fish yet.

bmx: refero beach.

dl: BMX - Refero Beach (YSI)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
If I hold off on blogging about BMX any longer, I am going to explode. I've been hooked ever since I first heard "Theme To BMX" on BIGSTEREO, but I never thought my words could do justice in explaining why they're one of my new favorite bands. I did include "War" on my Bathing Booties mini-playlist, but it just isn't enough! They really deserve their own post.

Who are these characters? I'm glad you asked. The allegedly Australian culprits of awesomeness go by the names of Dominique Bird, Jad Lee, Temma Lee, and Dane Wilson. The genius behind it all is Moods. The vibe has been compared to a lo-fi version of Gameboy/Gamegirl, but I think that's mostly because of the male-female vocal exchange and whole "being Australian" kind of thing. Either way, they are the soundtrack to your next beach party.

"Refero Beach" kind of makes me feel like this, but inside my body. I'm so hooked on the child-like vocals, call and response, and guys saying that they're a girl's girl.

le corps mince de francoise: pollution.

dl: LE CORPS MINCE DE FRANCOISE - POLLUTION! (YSI)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Le Corps Mince de Françoise was recently featured on BIGSTEREO. I left a comment stating, "I’m not quite obsessed yet, but I’m extremely intrigued." I may be eating my words soon, much like I'm totally eating up their newest song "POLLUTION!" In fact, I am devouring this shit like some Pringles. I've popped and I just can't stop, and if I could pop-and-lock...I'd make a video of myself doing it to this song and post it on YouTube. I'd proceed to get famous in Helsinki, because that is where Le Corps is from. And if they're not famous there yet, they should be. Mmm...Pringles.

Great minds think alike, as I immediately made the same CSS (Cansei de Ser Sexy) comparison as Travis, perhaps with a little bit of TheDeathSet mixed in. "POLLUTION!" rocks a little bit harder than the peppy vibe of "COOL AND BORED" (listen here), and it's precisely the sort of silly, slightly noisy electro jam that I've been craving. If I don't get a damn dancefloor under my feet right now, people are going to start staring.

tyskerhar: interplanetarian tai chi.

d/l: TYSKERHAR - Interplanetarian Tai Chi (YSI)
---------------------------------------------------------------
The facts are these: Tyskerhar is an electro duo from Berlin, a cute Asian chick and a dude with a laptop. I found them while browsing last.fm, even though they were featured three times on BIGSTEREO since March. However, I was lucky to miss them because otherwise my ears might not have collided with "Interplanetarian Tai Chi". This tune is a tad bit mellower and weirder than those that were posted by Travis, and no diggity...it's my favorite.

But there's nothing wrong with the dirtier dance-rap tunes the group pops out. A prime example of this is "C Pop", which I was going to say reminds me of Uffie's "Pop the Glock", but I realized that there was one big difference-- I actually like this song. I suppose I shouldn't mention how it reminds me of this song too? No, I shouldn't. But I did.

I'm a little baffled about why these kids aren't a bigger deal. Tyskerhar writes on their space, "$$$ If you own a label you should sign us and make us all billionaires. $$$" Can someone please take that advice? Now? I need Tyskerhar performing in a venue near me. NOW!

pop the fish: sue ellen.

POP THE FISH stormed into my life with a green plastic gun. He was singing, and I had no idea what he was saying.

I had been reading Bigstereo when I decided to check out the other 5000 finalists in the Diesel:U:Music competition. On the first page I open, this guy is staring at me. Okay, so he's not staring at me...he's standing on a beach looking away from me. However, I get the feeling that any minute now he'll take a sharp turn and shoot me with his plastic gun. I am not concerned. 'Tis only a water gun, right? WRONG. This dude was holding a fully-loaded booty gun. One shot, and I couldn't control my ass. It was shaking. In French.

For those who can't handle my crazed fictional internet fantasies, let me just give you the facts. Pop the Fish is an electroclash artist from Normandy. I like the way he says "Sue Ellen". That's all you really need to know. OK?

WEBBYVANDERQUACKIN': I have fallen in love with Jody Rosen because of this podcast about R. Kelly and his sexosaurus tendencies. Hear it on Slate. How about that Miami Horror remix of Codebreaker? Thank you Bigstereo.
