the finches: human like a house

THE FINCHES came to my campus, and now I'm totes crushin' on Carolyn Pennypacker Riggs. You may understand by merely listening to her voice, but you won't fully understand until you see her live. Her laid-back sense of humor could make any boy giggle and blush. Even GAYS!

Aaron Morgan's pretty cool too, I guess. I think people tend to forget him because Carolyn is a pretty girl with a pretty voice, but there would be no The Finches without him. An absence of The Finches in your life would be very sad.

So you don't really like folk music? Well, listen to this shit anyways. According to the band's bio, Carolyn Pennypacker Riggs' voice can be compared to Vashti Bunyan, Mirah, and the Marine Girls. I will honestly state that these comparisons do nothing for me. Truth is, the girl can just SANG. Yeah, I said it. I guess I'd call her the Jenny Lewis that you don't get tired of after a bunch of listens, but that's just another meaningless indie-bullshit comparison. Cuteness is most important...

Actual dialogue from concert:

Carolyn: So is anyone here from LA?
--Crowd: ::random woos and cheering::
Carolyn: Yeah, so is anyone here from Little Rock, Arkansas?
--Crowd: ::brief silence::
--Guy in Back: My grandfather died there!
Carolyn: Oh, morbid.
--Guy in Back: No, it was a beautiful place to die.
Carolyn: See...that's what I was thinking!

Whatever, I guess you had to be there. One of the songs
that stood out that night was "The Road", which featured unexpected guest vocals by Silvie Margot Deutsch of Belly Boat as she sang from the back of the room. This song was featured on their debut EP Six Songs. They currently have a new album out entitled Human Like a House, and I'm really feeling the title track. You should listen to it. When you're done, you can listen to live versions of BOTH of these songs on their website! Lastly, I'd like to say that if you like what you hear, I highly recommend both the EP and full album. Six Songs is available through their website, but you'll have to go here to get Human Like a House. Oh wait. One more thing. "Daniel's Song" is highly highly recommended as well.

BLOGWATCH: I suppose this may be very out of place in a folk-pop post, but Kevipod posted the new Beyonce video for "Freakum Dress" and it is pure ferocity like some Top Model shit. Amazing choreography. I'm pretty sure this guy Jonte is one of the dancers in the beginning.

gotdion: remixes volume 5.

GotdioN is back and so am I!

His new and fifth volume of remixes includes his takes on 8Ball & MJG, BigBoi & The Purple Ribbon Allstars, Chris Brown, Christina Aguilera, Clipse, Destiny's Child, Kanye West, Ludacris, Missy Elliott, N.E.R.D., Richboy, Omarion, & Timbaland.

I find that his remix of Destiny's Child's "Emotion" is definitely one of my favorites. The original song and the Neptunes remix never quite did it for me, and it remains my least favorite Destiny's Child single to date. Whether it was intentional, GotdioN's reinterpretation of the song changes the feeling entirely. Originally, the song is sad with an element of sweetness. In this version, the R&B trio sounds pissed. The hypnotic nature of the beat brings out a jealous and neurotic level that isn't heard before. Like, seriously. Beyonce will cut you if you don't tell her where you are now. Because she motherfuckin' needs you.

And let's talk about that "Icebox" remix. I'm not talking about that whack-ass shit with Usher. I'm talking GotdioN. I can't even listen to the original anymore...the energy can't compare to this. If you like what you hear be sure to cop the free download of GotdioN's remixes over at his space.

BLOGWATCH: CAUSE=TIME features two new tracks by Kenna, who you may know from PSP commercials or his time as Fred Durst's protege (groan, I know...but he's actually kind of good). Gorilla Vs. Bear brings us the import-only Timbaland track featuring the one and only M.I.A. as well as Marissa Nadler covering Xiu Xiu.

plp: dat urkel dance (did i do dat?).

(Georgia hip-hop song)
- space it - space it again -

I have been immersed in my thesis for the past week or so, but that hasn't stopped me from developing a new obsession with The Urkel Dance (watch, wiki). In searching for a MP3 of the song, I came across this song. I don't think I need to say much more...It's a dirty south rap song about The Urkel Dance. I'm sold. I might even listen to it while eating these. Make sure to check out other charming tunes by PLP, including the, um, classic and classy "Skeeted On Dat Hoe".

samuel: remix of timbalands "give it to me".

d/l: TIMBALAND f/ MS. FURTADO & J.T.- Give It To Me (Samuel remix) (YSI)
(relatively minimal mix of Timbo's latest single)

To be entirely upfront, I was never feeling the original mix of this song. Despite my supposed hiatus, I couldn't resist posting this remix of it after I got word about it from Samuel. I guess I'm just a sucker for supporting artists that I like...and this mix is super-addictive like some Lays potato chip shit. I'll be humming this beat in my sleep.

NOTE: Samuel now enters the IT'S THE MONEY SHOT!! club house.
