freekstyler: all your base are belong to ace.

dl: FREEKSTYLER - All Your Base Are Belong To Ace (YSI) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Almost every week, I get an e-mail from someone who claims they're a fan of this blog, and almost every week this is from someone who BCC'd the same message to dozens of other blogs. However, this wasn't the case this week. My ego was stroked by a self-declared "young dancer/designer in Montreal. Fucking with music on the side." He not only claimed to be a fan of ITMS!!, but he was also able to back it up by citing a notable favorite of his-- the Swedish dance-jams of Animal Keyboard, posted back in July 2007. Now, it goes without saying that you don't have to say you love my blog to get on this site. I listen to everything that's sent to me, and I almost always post what I like. But I couldn't help but feel warm and fuzzy inside after this delightful note.

The young man who wrote this goes by the name of Freekstyler, and creates mash-ups but as he says..."
not in the traditional sense. It's more along the lines of Girl Talk, if you know his stuff*. Recycling and amalgamating sound to create something fresh." The results are some rather infectious party records that will undoubtedly get individuals with various tastes out on the floor. Girl Talk is an excellent reference point, but Freekstyler leans a tad bit more into current pop, hip-hop, and top 40. But he doesn't forget about the classics. A great moment happens in "Floorcrusher" when an acappella of The Jackson 5's "ABC" merges with Janet Jackson's "Luv". It's like a Jackson family reunion without Rebbie, LaToya, or any fighting.

Oddly, my favorite Freekstyler creation wasn't included in the e-mail he sent. It may or may not involve Kelis and Ace of Base engaging in a tango that they were meant to dance.
  • Samples used for "All Your Base Are Belong To Ace"-- Ace of Base, Fatman Scoop, Janet Jackson, Kelis, Lloyd Banks, Mims, Missy Elliott, Ne-Yo, Sean Paul, Timbaland, Wisin & Yandel

* I'll forgive him for not realizing that I posted about Mr. Gillis, given that it was back in June 2006. I don't think anyone has been reading this blog that long.

thunderheist: suenos dulces.

THUNDERHEIST just entered my life, and that makes me sad.

This seems to be a week of artists I've overlooked or had to give a second chance, and I'm pretty sure that I didn't listen to Thunderheist because I got them confused with another group with "Thunder" in their name that sucks. This isn't the first time this has happened.

Thunderheist is composed of Isis and Grahm. Isis raps, Grahm DJs...and as a result, awesome things happen. "Sueños Dulces", which samples The Eurythmics' "Sweet Dreams", is the first song I heard by them. Having done my research, it's a possibility that it's one of the first songs most of the internet heard by them. Admittedly, I was a bit surprised that I liked this song. I don't even like "Sweet Dreams" or any other song by The Eurythmics. Beyond that, I absolutely hate when '80s songs are mutilated when sampled (see Smitty's "Died in Your Arms, exemption to Rihanna's "S.O.S."). Given these handicaps working against Thunderheist, it's safe to say that Isis is an incredibly awesome MC for selling me on this shit.

jesse dangerously: i ain't no halifax girl.

Jesse Dangerously's music and I discovered one another by sheer coincidence. Some might call it destiny. While browsing the Rappers Delight Club page on the space, I happened to glance at a comment left by Jesse's girlfriend stating, "My boyfriend is a rapper in Halifax and he has played you guys on the radio a few times." My curiosity got the best of me (considering I have friends hiking in Nova Scotia as we speak), so I decided to check out her man's page.

WHOA! This guy actually had some amazing beats...and his flow ain't too shabby either. Upon first listening of Jesse Dangerously, I wanted to describe him as "the product of Jurassic 5 and The Fresh Prince having a baby together". Later, I realized that this made no sense because no vaginas are included in the equation. It's a fact that you need a vagina to have a baby...Don't believe what you saw in Junior.

In any case, I wasn't that far off. Mr. Dangerously is heavily influenced by The Fresh Prince and the hip-hop era between 1988-1994. In Halifax, he's kind of a big deal on the hip-hop scene. Maybe my friends will run into him at the liquor dome.
