siik: single ladies remix.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
I made the exciting graphic you see above for work a while back, and I've been looking for an excuse to repost it. Thankfully, Mixtape Maestro reminded me that I should never take my eyes off of siik.org, posting an excellent "remix" of "Single Ladies".

I say "remix" since Siik's work leans more towards blend or mash-up. It's all either hit or near-miss, but the good ones make you hear songs in entirely different ways. Placing Sasha up in the club with Talib Kweli gives the song a bit of an Amerie vibe, and I mean that in the most complimentary way.

Don't forget to check out Siik's takes on T-Pain & Brandy. They're also delicioso, even if the woozy Weezy part is cut out of the former.

freekstyler: maximum capacity.

dl: FREEKSTYLER - Maximum Capacity (YSI)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
The internet appears to have taken a break from their collective, massive boner for sample-king Greg Gillis (Girl Talk). I never mentioned his latest album Feed The Animals (mostly because I figured you've already downloaded it) due to the fact that I feel that so many individuals have been working the A.D.D. mash-ups recently. Gillis has a very specific style that generally leans toward mixing classic rock with recent hip-hop hits, but others have taken the style to different levels by meshing indie with pop, indie with indie, pop with pop, and so forth. No disrespect to Gillis! I'm glad he managed to popularize this style, and his production is a lot sleeker, more inventive, and humorous than some of his biters. I'm just sayin' that there are other people doing what he does in a way that might appeal to other demographics, ya heard?

One of those people is Freekstyler, who recently sent me a new song called "Maximum Capacity". The new jam features elements of 50 Cent with Justin Timberlake & Timbaland, Aaliyah, Alice Deejay, Chris Brown & T-Pain, Diddy & Keyshia Cole, E-40, Enur & Natasja, Guns N' Roses, Huey, Larry Tee & Princess Superstar, R. Kelly, Technotronic, Tweet, and Usher. I'm particularly fond of the moment when Huey's "Pop, Lock & Drop It" has a brief fling with "Sweet Child O' Mine" and then decides that it'd rather make love in a club. I look forward to hearing more from Mr. Freekstyler, and you'll be hearing more about him on this blog whether you like it or not.

immuzikation: santogold + justice.

dl: SANTOGOLD vs. JUSTICE - L.E.S.D.A.N.C.E. (Immuzikation BlackNotBlend) (YSI)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
I never remember my dreams, but this morning I had a distinct memory of one of them. I was in some unidentifiable city, though some sort of combination of New York and London. I believe I was on a tour of some beautiful church. It was boring, so I spot Rick Ross and Trina. I decide that it'd be a good idea to hang out with them, and they're totally down. We're walking through the streets of New-London-York when a former acquaintance of mine starts shouting from miles away that she wants us to come pose in a picture with her. Rick Ross and Trina aren't having it. I start a mental dialogue with myself about whether I should ask Rick Ross if I could be on his next album, but then I get worried that he saw my review of Trilla and knows that I think he's a bad rapper. Then the other part of me says to myself, "Um, if he's such a bad rapper...why don't I have a deal with Def Jam and sell hundreds of thousands of albums?" This dilemma is never solved, and the dream ends with Rick Ross wanting to go into a health-food store and Trina refusing. I'd like to think that her refusal was something along the lines of "Uh uh, you know my traffic-stopping ass can't fit through that door!", but she didn't specify. I'm also sure that Shervin was in this dream at some point, possibly trying to continually convince me that Ashlee Simpson's "Outta My Head" is actually a good song (not really, but I swear he made a cameo appearance).

Why am I telling you all this? It's quite simple. As I was recounting this dream via e-mail, I was listening to a mash-up of Santogold and Justice by Immuzikation. At approximately 2:37, vocals from Trina's "Told Yall" are introduced into the mix. This was not indicated in the e-mail that was sent out by Immuzikation. FREAKY. Not to mention that Santi White was one of the writers for "Outta My Head". Not to mention that "L.E.S. Artistes" has been stuck in my head all week. Not to mention that I was JUST thinking about how Justice is completely overrated.

Coincidence? I think not. Immuzikation iz n mi subkonschnz, fukn wit mi brn!

immuzikation: mgmt remix.

dl: IMMUZIKATION - Just Another Call With You (MGMT vs. lots) (YSI)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Immuzikation has been popular on the blogs lately. And with good reason! Mashing up Daft Punk and LCD Soundsystem with MGMT, Yelle with Weezer, Justice with Boyz II Men*, Ratatat with Enon, Jay-Z with The Postal Service...the fun just doesn't stop. This Georgia boy knows where the party's at, and I'm personally inviting all of you to crash it with this new joint he sent my way. It goes a little something like this...
  • MGMT - "Just Becuz" + Soulwax - "Another Excuse (DFA Remix)" + Prince - "When Doves Cry" + Chromeo - "Call Me Up" + Afrika Bambaataa "Planet Rock" + Stardust - "Music Sounds Better with You" = "Just Another Call with You"
"Just Becuz" is nearly five years old, recorded when MGMT were still at Wesleyan University. It's a bit dancier than most of their new stuff, yet it remains one of my favorite MGMT songs of all time. Long story short, Immuzikation is my mash-up GOD for doing this mix.

freekstyler: all your base are belong to ace.

dl: FREEKSTYLER - All Your Base Are Belong To Ace (YSI) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Almost every week, I get an e-mail from someone who claims they're a fan of this blog, and almost every week this is from someone who BCC'd the same message to dozens of other blogs. However, this wasn't the case this week. My ego was stroked by a self-declared "young dancer/designer in Montreal. Fucking with music on the side." He not only claimed to be a fan of ITMS!!, but he was also able to back it up by citing a notable favorite of his-- the Swedish dance-jams of Animal Keyboard, posted back in July 2007. Now, it goes without saying that you don't have to say you love my blog to get on this site. I listen to everything that's sent to me, and I almost always post what I like. But I couldn't help but feel warm and fuzzy inside after this delightful note.

The young man who wrote this goes by the name of Freekstyler, and creates mash-ups but as he says..."
not in the traditional sense. It's more along the lines of Girl Talk, if you know his stuff*. Recycling and amalgamating sound to create something fresh." The results are some rather infectious party records that will undoubtedly get individuals with various tastes out on the floor. Girl Talk is an excellent reference point, but Freekstyler leans a tad bit more into current pop, hip-hop, and top 40. But he doesn't forget about the classics. A great moment happens in "Floorcrusher" when an acappella of The Jackson 5's "ABC" merges with Janet Jackson's "Luv". It's like a Jackson family reunion without Rebbie, LaToya, or any fighting.

Oddly, my favorite Freekstyler creation wasn't included in the e-mail he sent. It may or may not involve Kelis and Ace of Base engaging in a tango that they were meant to dance.
  • Samples used for "All Your Base Are Belong To Ace"-- Ace of Base, Fatman Scoop, Janet Jackson, Kelis, Lloyd Banks, Mims, Missy Elliott, Ne-Yo, Sean Paul, Timbaland, Wisin & Yandel
  • Samples used for "Floorcrusher"-- Beenie Man, Beyoncé, Black Eyes Peas, Bobby Valentino, Christina Aguilera, DMX, Fergie, Fort Minor, Gwen Stefani, J-Kwon, Janet Jackson, Jay-Z, Justice, Justin Timberlake, Kelly Rowland, Lil' Flip, Queen, Spice Girls, T.I., The Jackson 5
* I'll forgive him for not realizing that I posted about Mr. Gillis, given that it was back in June 2006. I don't think anyone has been reading this blog that long.

rock steady drew: remixes.

ROCK STEADY DREW sent me his mix of Rihanna's "Don't Stop the Music" a few days ago.

I have to confess that I'm really into the gay euro-dancetrash vibe of the original song, so it took a while to get into this. More accurately, it took hearing his remix of M.I.A.'s "Boyz" to really take a moment to listen to everything he had to offer. I realized later that this had been posted on Missingtoof a while back. I then realized that I had even read this post and somehow not listened to the remix at the time. ::shrug:: In any case, this dude somehow took "Summer Nights" from Grease and put it together with Bonde do Role. And it does not sound incredibly stupid. I am amazed by that. Then there's his remix of Fergie's "Glamorous", which I'm slowly realizing that everyone seems to secretly like. I mean, I was in a car with my sister and brother-in-law and he made a mixtape with back-to-back Fergie. I never thought I could ever hear another "Glamorous" remix ever again, and then Rock Steady Drew showed me the way.

easter egg: pour it up.

EASTER EGG has recently released a full mash-up album of “hipster hop” entitled Pour It Up.

I’m not the hugest fan of long-form mash-ups because I'm way too A.D.D. for them, but there are some exceptions. Some of these exceptions exist on Pour It Up. The other tracks on the album come close but don't always make it. With that said, Easter Egg shows incredible potential to create great songs out of other people’s music.

The few low points of this album have to do with the choice of acappellas, most of which are southern, novelty, or "ringtone rapper" hip-hop songs. Newsflash: No matter WHAT you do to “Party Like a Rockstar” it will not become a good song. I haven’t heard a single remix of this song that made me like it more, and I never expect to in my lifetime.*

Then there are moments of mash-up magic that disintegrate after a minute or so into the song [see “Let’s Make Roses” (Andre 3000 vs. Cansei de Ser Sexy) or “7 Months to Gossip” (Missy Elliott vs. Data)]. When taken in small doses these are certified ass-shaking jams, but I’d rather bump the originals at my dance party.

And that is the ultimate mash-up test—Would you play this at a dance party?

When “Pop, Walk, and Love It” is the mash-up in question, the answer is “hell fucking yes”. The song places Huey’s tune “Pop, Lock, and Drop It” against Daft Punk’s “Digital Love”. From Busta Rhymes to Kanye West, it seems everything in hip-hop is a little bit better when you add Daft Punk to the recipe.**

Overall, Pour It Up is a decent party album to play when you forget to make a playlist before your big dance party. Particularly if you only hang out with southern hip-hop enthusiasts and electro-hipsters.

Download the album here, featuring the following: 8Ball, Cassie, Chromeo, Clipse, Copy, CSS, Daft Punk, Data, Dead Prez, DJ Unk, Dr. Dre, E-40, Huey, Juelz Santana, Justice, Keak Da Sneak, Lil Scrappy, Lil Wayne, Ludacris, Mannie Fresh, Mike Jones, Missy Elliott, Mistah F.A.B., Miss B, Outkast, The Pack, Pharrell, Ratatat, Shop Boyz, Simian Mobile Disco, Slim Thug, Souls of Mischief, Spank Rock, Three 6 Mafia, Too $hort, Twista, UGK, YACHT, Ying Yang Twins, Young Buck, Yuksek, & Yung Joc.

* This might be a challenge all you DJs, producers, remixers, and whatnot. Before I die, I want you to TRY to create a remix of “Party Like a Rockstar” that I legitimately enjoy. You have until the day I die, an unfortunately vague deadline.

Though I don’t think even Daft Punk could save “Party Like a Rockstar”. Sorry, I had to go there.

rondo brothers: crazed.

THE RONDO BROTHERS are Diamond Jim and the Bastard Prince. They aren't actually brothers.

I've been particularly drawn to the Collette remix of their song "Crazed", featuring vocals by 20 Minute Loop lead-singer Kelly Atkins. This version of the song takes a completely different direction than the original, in which Atkins sings over a tortured trip-hop instrumental. Instead, we get a happy-go-lucky tune with semi-fucked up lyrics. Essentially, it's like listening to Lily Allen but less annoying.

The Rondo Brothers are already established as producers, and it's likely that you've heard their work in commercials and didn't notice it. They've also worked with MC Lars, Handsome Boy Modeling School, and toured with The Cure, The Rapture, and Interpol. Apparently, they also do mash-ups and remixes, such as the addictive "Princess Maniac". Who knew that 50 Cent and Michael Sembello would make beautiful music together? I didn't.

bald eagle: we are clubstars.

BALD EAGLE, born Chris Baronner, may not have made it in time for the Yo Majesty remix competition, but his new "reheat" of Yo Majesty and Does It Offend You, Yeah? is just in time for their appearance in The New Yorker.

Baronner just released his first mixtape, The Wonderful World of Bald Eagle & Friends - Live In The Fuck Hut # 1, which has been gaining some popularity here on the internets. The mixtape features tunes performed or mixed by Cansei de Ser Sexy, The Rapture, Switch, Diplo, Basement Jaxx, Le Tigre, New Young Pony Club, The Bird and The Bee, Peaches, Flosstradamus, and many more. It also includes Baronner's own delicious blend of Spektrum and Hollywood Holt and a one-second long track by his new DJ/production project When The Eagle Met the Wolf with Mister Wolf.

"We Are Clubstars" wasn't ready in time for the mixtape, bu
t now it's ready for your ears and I'm pretty sure those ears will be liking this. I've heard many mixes of "Club Action" and I wouldn't be recommending this if it sucked. Just sayin'. If you haven't already, be sure to capture the full Wonderful World mixtape on Bigstereo.

mike b: italian pop lock.

MIKE B is a DJ, and he might be the one that saved your life last night. No? Not right? Well, it's a fact that he is the man behind "Italian Pop Lock", which I'm currently bumping as I type.

"Italian Pop Lock" brings together the delightful anthem "Pop Lock and Drop It" by Baby Huey (see video) and Black Strobe's "Italian Fireflies". I honestly don't know the latter song, and I probably wouldn't like this as much if I did.

In fact, I initially thought the instrumental of "Italian Fireflies" was annoying, but when I thought about it...it's no more annoying than the original instrumental of "Pop Lock and Drop It" (or the entire song for that matter). For some reason, it seems like these songs were meant to be together...and that's the only way I'll take my mash-ups and blendinis. Maybe the vocals and instrumental are annoying, but they're annoying together. Ain't that some cute shit?

Now we just need some girls to dance with us in empty pools. DO NOT RUN. Running is not acceptable, but I'm sure the lifeguards won't mind if you toot that thang up.

leif: berfdayin'.

LEIF will be celebrating his 18th berfday this Friday, and you know what that means. Right. He will be 18.

Leif has been in the IT'S THE MONEY SHOT!! clubhouse since before it existed. Nearly a year ago, his remix of M.I.A.'s "URAQT" provided an exciting conclusion to the first post on this piece of interweb. The mix was included in his remix compilation Arular Gone Glam, which has been on heavy pod rotation along with his Spank Rock remix project Spank Rock Rejawned. He completed two remixes for the Mirror Boiyz of "Don't Get It Twisted" and "IRL", a remix of another ITMS favorite Bedtime for Toys, a collaboration with the wonderful Onili, and the list doesn't end there. His work was recently seen on scattermish, callmeMickey, and chazology. Long story short...he's not even legal yet and his musical resume could probably shit on your actual resume. Or at least mine.

Though Leif seems to be retiring from the mash-up scene, he recently dropped a song entitled "LoveBroke". I was sold from the start on this one, as Fergie's "Glamorous", Trina's "No Panties", and Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" rendezvoused in a moment of musical bliss. Needless to say, this piece of musical genius quickly creeped its way into my Top 25 Most Played.

A while ago, Leif dropped the NEON DANCES EP, a full collection of mash-ups and mixes. Along with "LoveBroke", check out two jams from that project. Note the inclusion of Khia in "Do The Sexy Work II". Just sayin'.

I ventured to NYC this weekend. Therefore, no thesis-sexy-time.

I went with my friends, a boy whose name I forgot already, and a cardboard cut-out of another boy to Santana's Town, a store located uptown and affiliated with rapper
Juelz Santana. Upon arrival, my friend Emily was disappointed by the size of the store. Despite this, she still wanted a few pictures to document her arrival. While taking said pictures, a child stepped out of the store and asked, "Yo, are you gonna buy something?"

The child then noticed the cardboard cutout. "Who's that?" Three other children emerge from the store. Somehow, the four children wind up posing for pictures outside of the store with a cardboard cutout and a collection of white kids (us). Once we actually managed to get inside the store, the children began to ask more questions. "Why did you make a cardboard cut-out of him?" For a movie. "What channel it on?" Um...youtube.

At this point, we found ourselves in the back of Santana's Town watching the video with an employee and four children. Surreal. I don't think I have much more to say about this topic.
