pdl: featured on listen up podcast.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
I can't deny that my blog has blatant ties to the Vanita Phone Company*, so I should probably mention that PdL was featured yesterday on the Listen Up! podcast.

You may have previously heard his song "Happiness" thanks to FLUXBLOG. Or caught word of his "playdate" Matt & Lil Kim album on BIGSTEREO or the Matt & Kim website. Maybe you heard his Cassie-OH remix of Cassie's "Me & U" on Discobelle or Palms Out Sounds. Or perhaps you were one of those people who were like "WTF is this?" in the comment section of MAKE blog's post on Gertrude, his LED drawing machine. And if you read this blog, you'll notice that his face is totally in a flyer two posts down (so sue me if I like to promote my friends!)

If none of this rings a bell, then now is the time to get familiar. His debut solo album Stop Means Go will be available digitally very soon, so I will spare you from anymore details...because you will probably be hearing about him again on this blog. Uh, very soon.

moneyshot exclusive: the swansong of gazpacho sanchez.

Today I received this message in my inbox at still-a-g(thang)mail...

"Dear all,
It is with a heavy heart and phat beatz that I deliver to you in mp3 form the first, last and only song of Gazpacho Sanchez. Gazpacho was a singer, time-traveller, friend of lemurs both real and puppet alike, ModelSpace resident, one of five SARS victims, and, first and foremost, he was a model. Gazpacho travelled into the future (which is now) to join ModelSpace and make a hit record with production team PdL and JJ Shonshay at Dregs Productions. He successfully became a ModelSpace member in June of 2006. ModelSpace featured him on ModelsYouShouldKnow. His hit record faced more difficulty. Time travel left him with only enough money for one hit song at Dregs and transformed his lemur friend Olivia Newton J. into a puppet. Tragically, Gazpacho was only able to record one verse before the Department for Homeland Security deported him from now. He died in 1999 of SARS-related complications while relaunching his career in Shanghai. His lemur (puppet) friend advised the rest of the project, seeing it to completion and blessing it with her mournfully beautiful eerily kazoo-like voice. She also helped us to locate Gazpacho's people the Plantains because Gazpacho had always thought that the world would be a happier place having heard the sounds of their tribal flute choir as they gather their daily mushrooms from the forests they call their home. Olivia has requested that all proceeds go to help keep developers out of those forests so that, even though Gazpacho is gone, the Plantains will live on. Enjoy... Gazpacho would have wanted it that way.

Gazpacho Sanchez hopes that you reach your final destination,
PdL"

This all happened last night. It was quite strange so I have little memory of it but this one song. The lemur pictured above is not Olivia Newton J, but could possibly be her cousin. Rumor has it that Olivia will be pursuing a musical career in honor of Gazpacho. She will collaborate on an album of duets with several up and comers in the music industry. In the long run, she has expressed interest in working with Bjork, Outkast, and Phil Collins. Proposed songs include "I Will Always Love You (Even If I Am a Puppet)" and a cover of "Time After Time". But this is all just rumors.

"The Swansong of Gazpacho Sanchez" is full of lyrical complexity that will change your life.

BLOGWATCH: Beauty N the Beat has a whole lot of hotness including new ones from Kelis, Tatyana Ali (seriously), and a rare remix with Brandy of Sunshine Anderson's "Heard It All Before". Bigstereo has a new song by Fannypack, which is apparently in Old Navy commercials?

pdl: we all play happy, so let's all play "happiness", ok?

PdL does not stand for Punch-drunk Love. If you asked him what he stood for he'd tell you what he does not stand for---hate crimes...and the Pledge of Allegiance. If you were cool, you'd know that PdL stands for Perfidy de Licious, one half of the awesomely under-rated hip-hop duo The Mirror Boiyz (which I am totally unbiased about...of course). But you might not be cool...and that's why I'm here to help, because I'm SUCH a good friend.

On the proposed day of the world's end, PdL was featured on the lovely musical haven known as Fluxblog and everyone rejoiced in the sounds of "Happiness"...which goes to show you that one man can do a lot with a kazoo and a heart of gold. You can call it a summer jam or you can call it the jam of your life, but there's much more complexity existing beyond the sweet organ chords and catchy verse. Join me as I share the story...behind the music.

In spring of 2006, PdL was busy doing research for an ethnomusicology class at Wesleyan University. The final product of his readings and internet browsing was a song entitled "Shake that Bomb!" and a paper too, but that's not important. While developing "Shake that Bomb!", PdL came across samples of phone calls made on 9/11. He wanted to work the phone calls into the song by transforming samples from them into bass drums and snare drums. Once this was done, he liked the beat so much that he decided to use it for "Happiness". Are you offended? Are you appalled? Or are you still drawn in by the hypnotic glow the song offers? I vote the latter.

If "Happiness" becomes your jam of the summer, "Ambivalence" could easily become your token break-up jam...if you need one that is. The lyrics are quite simple, but the delivery captures the confusion you are left with at the end of a relationship. Pretending to be okay. Hating your ex. Reluctance to let go. These are among the themes hidden behind the electronic layers of de-Liciousness. Things we all go through and get over within a week or two once we recognize we can do much better. The song makes a blatant reference to the gay cowboy breakthrough film, Brokeback Mountain, but not in an annoying kind of way. It's nice to see that Mr. Licious hasn't forgotten his roots as an experimental gay rapper, taking the Notorious B.I.G.'s vocals and, um, making the late king of East Coast hip-hop sound like he's talking about gay sex. You read that right.

And how 'bout that bass line? It makes me feel like I'm back in church singing hymns in the choir. If you're not a disciple of PdL by the time those 3 minutes and 1 second pass, then we need to have a talk about what YOU stand for.
