PHAROAHE MONCH is going to make me do something I don't usually like to do-- embed a youtube video. It's okay though. I'll survive.

Sure. In hip-hop, you can surround yourself with so-called "bitches and hoes" in your video, make references to illegal substance...but if you're trying to say something in your video, you're shit out of luck. In Pharoahe Monch's new video "Gun Draws" he addresses the topic of gun violence, particularly in a domestic setting. The closing of the video includes the message, "We have undoubtedly become desensitized to death through senseless violence, whether perpetuated by or committed against us. This is my effort to help awaken the unconscious and nourish the youth." It includes sad statistics. Within the USA, guns are the leading cause of death for young black men, a child dies every 8 hours in a gun accident or suicide, and 4 out of 10 households with children own guns. The website for the song features even sadder facts-- "American children are more at risk from firearms than the children of any other industrialized nation. In one year, firearms killed no children in Japan, 19 in Great Britain, 57 in Germany, 109 in France, 153 in Canada, and 5,285 in the United States."

Because of Monch's refusal to edit the graphic content of this video, you won't be seeing this on MTV, BET, or any video channel for that matter. This is an internet exclusive. The acting in the video may be as bad as that of the other actors in Lindsay Lohan's video for "Confessions of a Broken Heart (Daughter to Father)". Either way, the man is trying to say something here.* His daughter got shot in the face. Not cool. I highly recommend heading to the site, where you can watch a trailer of the video, read the lyrics, and check out some facts about gun violence in America. The site also reminds us of those great individuals we've lost to the bullet from John F. Kennedy to Tupac Shakur. Go there.

* Not to say that Lindsay wasn't trying to say something...

BUY music by Pharoahe Monch

Normally, I'd post a song or two for you, but I don't want to get shut down for posting any of these tracks. I just wanted to make sure that Pharoahe Monch's message got out there. Since I can't let you go without a song, here's a less serious song by the British rap-comedy group Goldie Lookin Chain. It's an oldie, but a goodie. Slightly relevant to the topic, but also totally inappropriate for me to include in this post. So is the bonus track...but I just couldn't help it. I hate leaving you without music. And I'm willing to give you some obnoxious white rappers if necessary.
